E2791.09

Massey Ferguson E2791.09 – Engine ECU (EEM4): EGR Valve Communication Issue (ECU)

Issue description

The engine monitoring system could not receive the EGR control message from the CAN bus. The system logs the fault, activates a warning lamp, and indicates an active CAN message fault.

Check the cause

  1. Save the current error log in the system, and then erase it.

  2. Restart the ECU (cycle the key) after erasing the error log.

  3. If the fault occurs again during the next start, the issue is active.

  4. Check the EGR actuator wiring harness for defects (shorts, opens, or corrosion).

  5. Verify the integrity of the CAN bus communication lines to the EGR valve.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

Turn off the engine, remove the ignition key, and allow the engine to cool.

  2. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the battery terminals before performing any intervention on the electrical circuits.

  3. Inspect and repair wiring

Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the EGR valve. If the wiring is damaged, repair or replace the harness segment.

  4. Determine actuator status

If the wiring and CAN bus test fine, the EGR actuator itself is defective and must be replaced.

  5. Mark connections

Mark any electrical cables and pipes before removal to avoid mixing them up during reassembly.

  6. Remove defective EGR valve

Remove the defective EGR valve. Use containers to catch any residual coolant or fluids if the valve is liquid-cooled.

  7. Install new EGR valve

Install the new EGR valve, ensuring flange connections are tightened evenly in a crosswise pattern.

  8. Reconnect electrical harness

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connectors lock firmly into place.

  9. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery terminals.

  10. Clear codes and verify

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic service tool (like WinEEM3/4) and restart the tractor to verify the repair.
