Massey Ferguson E2791.10 – Engine ECU: EGR Valve Torque Limit

The actuator motor for the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is drawing too much current or hitting a torque limit before reaching its commanded position. This almost always indicates that the valve is mechanically binding, stuck due to heavy carbon/soot buildup, or the internal actuator mechanism has failed.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the EGR valve for chafing, melting, or corrosion to rule out a short or voltage drop.

   Remove the EGR valve and inspect the internal passages for excessive carbon/soot buildup preventing the valve from moving freely.

   Run an active test on the EGR valve using an AGCO diagnostic tool (EDT) to sweep it from 0% to 100% and listen for grinding or binding noises.

   Preparation

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Ensure the engine and exhaust components are completely cool.

   Removal

   Locate the EGR valve on the engine block (routing varies slightly by engine size). Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the valve.

   Unbolt

   Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the manifold/EGR cooler assembly. Carefully remove the valve, ensuring no debris falls into the intake or exhaust passages.

   Cleaning

   If the valve is heavily caked in soot but mechanically intact, use a dedicated EGR/carbon cleaner and a soft brush to clean the valve mechanism. Do not force the valve open aggressively, as this can strip the internal actuator gears.

   Replacement

   If the valve is mechanically damaged, the internal motor is burnt out, or cleaning does not restore smooth movement, the valve must be replaced.

   Installation

   Install the new or cleaned EGR valve using new OEM metal gaskets. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Use a diagnostic tool to clear the E2791.10 fault code. Some engine ECUs may require an EGR initialization or reset procedure via the diagnostic tool so the ECU can learn the new valve's end-stops.
