Issue description

The control module has lost communication with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve's electronic actuator, or the valve's internal calibration has drifted over a long period of time, preventing it from responding to module commands.

Check the cause

  3. Verify that the EGR valve is receiving proper operating voltage and a solid ground from the Engine ECU.

  4. Check for mechanical binding or heavy soot/carbon buildup that could jam the valve, causing the internal actuator motor to fail or draw excessive current.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool completely.

  2. Access the Valve

    Remove any engine cowlings or heat shields necessary to access the EGR valve, which is typically mounted near the exhaust manifold and EGR cooler.

  3. Disconnect Electronics

    Unplug the electrical connector from the EGR valve actuator.

  4. Removal

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the EGR valve to the engine block or cooler. Carefully extract the valve and discard the old metal gasket.

  5. Cleaning

    Inspect the EGR port and cooler for severe carbon blockages. Clean the mating surface thoroughly to ensure a proper seal.

  6. Installation

    Install the new EGR valve using a new OEM gasket. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall any removed heat shields or panels. Reconnect the battery.

  8. Calibration

    Connect a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the 002791.31 fault code. You will likely need to perform an EGR valve calibration/relearn procedure so the Engine ECU can learn the new valve's end-stops.
