Massey Ferguson E29.04 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Throttle Sensor Voltage Issue (ECU)

Issue description

The voltage signal from the throttle position sensor (potentiometer) is falling below the normal operating range or is shorted to ground.

Inspect the wiring harness leading to the foot throttle pedal inside the cab for chafing, pinched wires, or micro-cracks.
Disconnect the throttle potentiometer and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals.
Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving its reference voltage (usually 5V) and has a solid ground.
Perform a voltage/resistance sweep test: back-probe the signal wire and slowly depress the pedal. The voltage should increase smoothly (e.g., ~0.5V at idle to ~4.5V at wide-open throttle). If it drops out, skips, or reads 0 volts, the sensor is internally faulty.

Power Down
Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Sensor
Locate the foot throttle assembly on the right side of the cab floorboard.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical harness connector from the throttle potentiometer.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground or broken wire in the harness, splice and repair the damaged section using weather-sealed connectors.
Sensor Replacement
If the sensor failed the sweep test, unbolt the throttle pedal assembly/sensor from its mounting bracket. Install the new sensor/pedal assembly and torque the mounting bolts to factory spec.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes
Turn the ignition on. Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the 00029.04 code from the ECU's memory.
Test
Start the engine and test the foot pedal response to ensure smooth RPM acceleration without triggering a warning light.
