Massey Ferguson E3031.14 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Issue With The Temperature Of The DEF Tank Temperature Sensor. (ECU)

The system detected that the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) was frozen, commanded the DEF tank heating system to thaw it, but the DEF tank temperature sensor did not register a sufficient temperature increase within the programmed time limit.

   Monitor live data from the DEF tank temperature sensor using a diagnostic tool to check for implausible readings (e.g., extremely cold when ambient is warm).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connections at the DEF tank header for loose contacts, corrosion, or chafing.

   Test the DEF heating system by checking the engine coolant lines running to the DEF tank heating tube and ensuring the coolant control valve is opening.

   Check DEF fluid quality to ensure it is not contaminated with diesel or water, which alters its freezing point.

   Clear the Code

   Save the error log and erase the fault code to see if it actively returns upon a cold start.

   Resolve Heating Issues

   If the diagnostic checks reveal that hot coolant is not reaching the DEF tank, repair the blocked line or replace the DEF heater control valve.

   Clean Connections

   Disconnect the DEF header sensor unit. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and reconnect.

   Replace the Sensor Unit

   If the heating system is functional and the wiring is intact but the sensor still reads incorrectly, the temperature sensor has failed internally. Replace the entire DEF Sensor Header unit.

   Post-Repair

   After replacement, use a diagnostic tool to clear the codes and run a manual DEF system test or dosing test to verify the ECU is reading the correct temperature.
