Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an invalid, erratic, or unrecognized signal from the downstream (outlet) NOx sensor, indicating that the sensor has likely failed internally or its circuit is compromised.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and 4-pin connector between the downstream NOx sensor and the ECU for melted wires, chafing, corrosion, or loose pins

  2. Verify the sensor is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground, as power supply disruptions can trigger this fault

  3. Check for exhaust leaks around the SCR catalyst and the sensor bung, which can introduce oxygen and skew NOx readings

  4. Ensure the DEF (AdBlue) fluid is clean and uncontaminated, as poor quality can cause erratic post-catalyst readings

  5. Test the ECU for potential processing errors and check if an OEM software update is available for the aftertreatment system

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shock or short circuits. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the downstream NOx sensor, which is threaded into the exhaust pipe after (downstream of) the SCR catalyst.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the wiring harness. Cut any zip-ties securing the sensor wire.

  4. Removal

    Use a specialized slotted O2/NOx sensor socket to carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust boss.

  5. Preparation for Install

    Clean the exhaust bung threads. Apply a very light coat of high-temperature anti-seize (if not pre-applied), being careful not to get any on the sensor probe itself.

  6. Installation

    Thread the new sensor into the exhaust by hand to prevent cross-threading. Torque the sensor to the OEM specification (typically around 50 N·m or 37 lb·ft). Do not over-tighten.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug in the electrical connector. Secure the wiring harness with new high-temp zip-ties, ensuring the wire is routed away from hot exhaust components and sharp edges.

  8. Relearn/Reset

    Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive 003230.12 / SPN 3230 fault code. Perform an aftertreatment SCR system reset or NOx sensor relearn procedure if required by the diagnostic software.
