Massey Ferguson E3361.11 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM4: DEF Injector Has Not Opened Or Closed As Expected

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the DEF dosing valve (injector) is either physically stuck, failing to actuate properly, or has triggered an overheat protection protocol, often due to a lack of cooling flow or severe crystallization.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the injector tip and the mounting port on the exhaust for urea crystal buildup that could physically block the valve.

  2. Check DEF fluid quality to ensure it is not contaminated with dirt or debris, which can damage the injector nozzle.

  3. Inspect DEF cooling/backflow lines for blockages or kinks, as restricted flow will cause the injector to overheat.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the DEF dosing valve for damaged pins, corrosion, or short circuits.

  5. Using a diagnostic tool, perform a DEF Dosing Valve Test and a DEF Quantity Test to command the valve manually and verify actuation and spray volume.

Repair steps

  1. Wait for the Purge Cycle

    After shutting off the engine, do NOT immediately disconnect the DEF lines. Wait up to 30 minutes for the DEF pump to finish cooling the injector and purging the lines of fluid to prevent freezing/crystallization.

  2. Depressurize and Disconnect

    Wear appropriate eye and face protection, as the DEF lines may still be under low pressure. Disconnect the electrical connector from the DEF dosing valve.

  3. Remove DEF Lines

    Carefully disconnect the DEF supply and return/cooling lines from the injector module.

  4. Remove the Injector

    Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the DEF dosing valve to the SCR/exhaust system.

  5. Clean the Port

    Thoroughly clean the mounting port on the exhaust pipe, removing any crystallized urea deposits to ensure the new injector seats properly and is not immediately blocked.

  6. Install the New Injector

    Mount the new DEF dosing valve using a new gasket/seal. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the DEF supply and return lines, ensuring they click securely into place, and reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Connect your diagnostic tool, clear the E3361.11 fault code, and run a forced SCR system test or stationary regeneration to verify the new injector is dosing correctly and not overheating.
