Massey Ferguson 3363.04 – Engine ECU (EEM4): The DEF Tank Heater Solenoid Valve High Amps

Issue description

The EEM4 (Electronic Engine Management) monitoring system has detected a high amperage draw, specifically a short circuit to ground, on the DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid circuit. This means the electrical current flowing through the solenoid is higher than the acceptable threshold, usually due to damaged wiring shorting to the chassis or an internal short within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a system reset by turning the ignition off for a minimum of 60 seconds, then turn it back on to see if the code is active or stored.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or exposed wires shorting to the chassis.

  3. Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to check the resistance across the solenoid pins. An abnormally low resistance indicates an internal short.

  4. Temporarily plug the connector into a known good dosing/coolant valve solenoid to see if the fault clears. If it clears, the original valve is defective.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn the ignition off and wait at least 60 seconds for the ECU to fully power down and save data.

  2. Disconnect Battery

    Always disconnect the negative (-) battery cable before servicing the engine's electrical system to prevent ECU damage.

  3. Locate the Valve

    Locate the DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid, which is plumbed into the engine coolant lines routing to the DEF tank.

  4. Isolate Coolant

    Clamp off the coolant hoses on both sides of the solenoid valve to prevent excessive coolant loss.

  5. Remove Defective Valve

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Unclamp the coolant hoses from the valve and unbolt the solenoid from its mounting bracket.

  6. Install New Valve

    Mount the replacement DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid. Reattach and secure the coolant hoses.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the negative battery cable.

  8. Clear Codes

    Turn the ignition on and use the AGCO EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) or WinEEM4 service tool to clear the fault code. Run the engine and check for coolant leaks and ensure the code does not return.
