Massey Ferguson E3363.04 – Engine ECU: The DEF Tank Heater Solenoid Valve High Amps

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the electrical circuit controlling the DEF tank heater coolant valve has shorted to ground on the high side, causing an abnormally high current draw. This triggers the fault and may result in engine power degradation or derating.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points touching the chassis.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the DEF tank heater solenoid and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  3. With the battery disconnected and the ECU and solenoid unplugged, use a multimeter to test the high-side signal wire of the solenoid circuit for continuity to ground.

  4. Test the DEF tank heater coolant valve solenoid by measuring the resistance across its terminals and from the high-side terminal to the solenoid body to check for an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Access the Valve

    Locate the DEF tank heater coolant valve, which is typically plumbed into the engine coolant lines routing to the DEF tank.

  3. Address Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, repair the damaged section of the wire using heat-shrink butt connectors and re-loom the harness, ensuring it is routed away from sharp edges or extreme heat sources.

  4. Replace the Solenoid Valve

    Pinch off the coolant lines leading to and from the valve to minimize coolant loss. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the hose clamps and detach the coolant lines from the valve. Unbolt the valve from its mounting bracket. Install the new DEF tank heater coolant valve, reattach the hoses, and secure the clamps.

  5. Reassembly

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid.

  6. Refill and Bleed

    Top off the engine coolant to replace any lost fluid and bleed the cooling system of air if necessary.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as Jaltest or AGCO EDT) to clear the E3363.04 / SPN 3363 FMI 4 fault code from the Engine ECU.
