Issue description

This fault code indicates that the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) tank heater solenoid valve is drawing an abnormally high amount of electrical current (High Amps). A "High Amps" condition typically points to a short circuit within the solenoid's internal electromagnetic coil or a short in the wiring harness leading to the valve.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the DEF tank heater solenoid valve. Look for melted insulation, chafing against the frame, or exposed wires that could be shorting to ground or to each other.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the solenoid valve and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid pins. If the resistance is extremely low or reads as a dead short, the internal coil has failed.

  3. With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and check the harness side for proper voltage and ensure there is no short to ground on the power supply wire.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, shut down the engine, set the parking brake, and turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position. Wear protective gloves to protect your hands from crystallized DEF and engine coolant.

  2. Drain Coolant

    Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system to a level just below the DEF heater solenoid valve into a clean, suitable container.

  3. Disconnect Electrical

    Disconnect the electrical harness assembly from the connection on the solenoid valve.

  4. Remove Hoses

    Loosen the hose clamps on both the inlet and outlet sides of the valve. Carefully pull the coolant hose assemblies off the solenoid valve.

  5. Remove Valve

    Remove the mounting bolts securing the solenoid valve to its bracket and remove the faulty valve.

  6. Install New Valve

    Mount the new solenoid valve and install the bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to the OEM specification (typically around 22 N·m or 195 lb-in).

  7. Reconnect Hoses

    Push the coolant hoses onto the new valve's fittings and tighten the hose clamps securely (typically around 7 N·m or 62 lb-in).

  8. Reconnect Electrical

    Plug the electrical harness back into the solenoid.

  9. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the cooling system with the appropriate extended-life coolant. Start the engine, check for coolant leaks, and bleed any trapped air from the cooling system.

    Verify the wattage/resistance style of the solenoid (e.g., 7W or 10W variants) to match the ECU's expected current draw. Do not replace the entire DEF tank header unit if only the external coolant flow solenoid has failed.
