Massey Ferguson E3510.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / AGCO Power EEM4: Engine Module 5 Volt Sensor Supply Voltage Issue
Issue description
The Engine Electronic Module (EEM4) monitoring system has detected that the 5V DC reference voltage supply (often designated in the system as "supply 3" or "supply 1" depending on the sub-circuit) is out of bounds. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit in one of the 5-volt sensors, a short to ground/power in the sensor wiring harness, or an internal hardware failure within the ECU itself.

Check the cause
Perform a sensor isolation test by disconnecting 5V sensors (e.g., fuel rail pressure, camshaft speed) one at a time while monitoring the 5V supply voltage. If voltage normalizes, the disconnected sensor is internally shorted.
Inspect the engine wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or oxidation. Measure the supply (+5V) and ground pins at the sensor connectors to engine ground to check for shorts.
Verify ECU integrity: If all 5V sensors are unplugged and wiring tests good, but the 5V supply is still out of range directly at the ECU pins, the ECU has an internal failure.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate shorted component
Based on your diagnostic checks, locate the shorted component (sensor or wiring).
Replace faulty sensor
If a sensor is shorted: Remove and replace the faulty sensor.
Repair or replace wiring harness
If the wiring harness is damaged: Repair the broken/shorted wires using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section. Clean any oxidized connector pins with electrical contact cleaner.
Replace defective ECU
If the ECU is defective: Disconnect the main harness connectors from the EEM4 controller and unbolt it from its mounting bracket. Install the replacement ECU.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Clear fault code
Use a compatible diagnostic tool (like the AGCO EDT) to clear the E3510.31 fault code. (Note: If the ECU was replaced, the new module must be programmed by a dealer to match the specific tractor's engine parameters).
Verify repair
Start the engine and verify that the warning lamp remains off and the 5V supply reads correctly.
