Massey Ferguson 3511.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Module 5 Volt Sensor Supply Voltage Issue
Issue description
The controller has detected an abnormal voltage (either too high, too low, or a short circuit) on the 5-volt reference circuit. The Engine Control Module (ECM/ECU) outputs a regulated 5.0 ± 0.2 VDC to power various critical engine sensors. If this circuit shorts to ground, shorts to battery voltage, or experiences an open circuit, all sensors on that specific 5V rail will lose their reference voltage, causing multiple sensor errors and potential engine derate or shutdown.

Check the cause
Check ECU Output: Using a multimeter, measure the voltage at the 5V supply pin on any accessible engine sensor connector. It should read approximately 5.0 VDC.
Sensor Isolation Test (Short Circuit Check): If the voltage is pulled down, disconnect the 5V sensors one at a time (Fuel Rail Pressure, MAP, Oil Pressure, etc.). If the 5V reference returns to normal after unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor is internally shorted.
Harness Wiggle Test: While monitoring the 5V circuit with a multimeter, wiggle the engine wiring harness and connectors to check for intermittent shorts or open circuits.
Pin Inspection: Disconnect the main ECU harnesses and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-back pins, or moisture ingress that could bridge the 5V pin to ground or 12V.

Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic wiggle test revealed a harness issue, locate the chafed or broken wire. Splice and solder the wire, then seal it with heat-shrink tubing. Reroute the harness away from sharp edges or high-heat sources.
Replace Faulty Sensor (If Applicable)
If a specific sensor was found to be shorting the 5V rail, remove the retaining bolts/clips, extract the faulty sensor, and install the replacement. Torque to OEM specifications.
Replace ECU (Worst-Case Scenario)
If the wiring harness is completely isolated and tests good, and no sensors are plugged in, but the ECU still fails to output 5V, the internal power supply of the ECU has failed. The ECU must be replaced and flashed with the correct software for the tractor.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the 003511.31 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
