Massey Ferguson 3516.17 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Aftertreatment Control Module: DEF Quality Sensor Has Detected A Problem With The DEF Sample

The DEF Quality Sensor has measured the urea concentration in the tank and found it to be outside the acceptable operating range (typically 32.5%), or the sensor itself is experiencing electrical drift/failure.

   Fluid Quality Test: Use a DEF refractometer to test the fluid currently in the tank. It should read exactly 32.5% urea. If it reads significantly higher or lower, the fluid is compromised.

   Contamination Check: Inspect the DEF tank for visual signs of contamination, such as water dilution, diesel fuel (which will float on top and damage the system), or dirt.

   Wiring and Connector Inspection: Check the wiring harness leading to the DEF quality sensor/header for chafing, open circuits, or short circuits. Inspect the connector pins for corrosion or moisture.

   Sensor Face Inspection: Remove the sensor/header and check the sensor face for heavy urea crystallization or physical contamination that might be causing false readings.

   Drain the Tank

   If the DEF is contaminated, diluted, or degraded, place a clean drain pan under the DEF tank and completely drain the fluid.

   Flush the System

   If severe contamination (like diesel fuel) is found, flush the tank thoroughly.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the fluid tests perfectly at 32.5% but the code remains active, the DEF quality sensor has drifted or failed internally. Disconnect the electrical harness and fluid lines from the DEF header/sensor assembly. Remove the mounting ring/bolts and pull the old sensor assembly out of the tank. Install the new DEF quality sensor/header and secure it.

   Refill

   Fill the tank with fresh, known-good ISO 22241-certified Diesel Exhaust Fluid.

   Validate Repair

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on, use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the active 003516.17 fault code, and start the engine. Let the tractor idle for a few minutes to allow the system to run its diagnostic checks and verify the code does not return.
