Massey Ferguson 3521.16 – Engine ECU: DEF Quality Sensor Has Detected A Problem With The DEF Sample

The DEF quality sensor has detected that the urea concentration is reading too high or is otherwise abnormal. This occurs when the fluid is outside the acceptable 32.5% urea range due to contamination, degradation, or a failing sensor, often inducing an engine derate to protect the SCR system.

   Test the DEF fluid currently in the tank using a DEF refractometer to ensure it reads exactly 32.5% urea (fluid contamination cause).

   Inspect the DEF tank for signs of contamination, such as dirt, diesel fuel, or water ingress.

   Check the DEF tank cap and breather to ensure they are sound and sealing properly to keep dust and moisture out.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the DEF quality sensor for corrosion, chafing, or loose connections (sensor/wiring fault cause).

   Drain the DEF Tank

   Completely drain the existing DEF/AdBlue from the tank. Do not reuse this fluid.

   Clean the Tank

   Flush the tank with distilled water to remove any crystallized urea or contaminants. Ensure the tank is completely dry.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the fluid tested fine but the code persists, the DEF quality sensor itself has failed. Remove the old sensor module from the tank assembly and install the new OEM sensor.

   Refill with Fresh DEF

   Fill the tank with new, high-quality, factory-sealed DEF (32.5% urea).

   Clear Codes

   Use a compatible diagnostic tool (such as an AGCO EDT or Jaltest AGV) to clear the 003521.16 fault code from the Engine ECU.

   Re-run Diagnostics

   Run the machine to ensure the SCR system primes properly and the code does not return.
