Massey Ferguson 4.00.09 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS1): Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an abnormal electrical current (amperage draw) on the circuit that controls the forward directional clutch solenoid valve. This typically means the solenoid coil has internally shorted, has high resistance, or there is a short/open circuit in the wiring harness leading to the solenoid. When this occurs, the transmission may fail to engage forward gears or may slip.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the TRANS1 module and the forward clutch solenoid for rubbed wires, corrosion in the connector pins, or a short to ground/power.
Disconnect the forward clutch solenoid and measure the resistance (ohms) across its coil pins. Compare the reading to the OEM specification; an out-of-spec reading confirms a failed solenoid coil.
Perform a swap test by swapping the forward clutch solenoid with the reverse clutch solenoid. Clear the codes and operate the tractor. If the fault code changes to a Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue, the solenoid is definitively the culprit. If the code remains on the forward circuit, the issue is in the wiring harness or the TRANS1 module.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the forward clutch solenoid (refer to the specific model's hydraulic/electrical schematic to distinguish it from the reverse or modulation solenoids).
Removal
Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the solenoid in place.
Extraction
Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid will drain out.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining bolt/clip.
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Start the tractor and use the dashboard sequence or a diagnostic tool (like Wintest) to clear the fault codes. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure as required by the service manual to ensure smooth engagement.
