Massey Ferguson 4.00.0C – Transmission Controller / Module (TRANS1): Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the electrical current (amperage) drawn by the forward clutch solenoid is outside the expected operating range. This is usually caused by an internal short in the solenoid coil, a short circuit in the wiring harness, or a failing solenoid drawing too much current.

Check the cause
Verify the Fault: Clear the fault codes, turn the key switch OFF and then ON. Start and drive the tractor, modulating the clutch. If the code returns immediately, it is a hard fault (likely a dead short or failed coil).
Wiring Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the TRANS1 controller and the forward clutch solenoid. Look for chafing, melted insulation, or corrosion that could cause a short to ground or a short to power.
Resistance Test: Disconnect the forward clutch solenoid and measure the resistance (ohms) of the solenoid coil using a multimeter. If the resistance is out of specification (typically reading as a dead short or very low ohms), the solenoid itself has failed.
Voltage Test: Check the supply voltage to the solenoid to ensure the TRANS1 module is sending the correct voltage.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Ensure the tractor is safely parked before beginning repairs.
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually located on the side of the transmission housing) and identify the Forward Clutch Solenoid.
Identify the correct solenoid on the valve block.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the Forward Clutch Solenoid.
Prepare the solenoid for removal or further testing.
If the diagnostic resistance test proved the solenoid is faulty (internal short causing high amp draw), remove the retaining hardware holding the solenoid to the valve block.
Remove the hardware securing the faulty solenoid.
Remove the old solenoid and install the new replacement Forward Clutch Solenoid. Torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Install the new solenoid and secure it to the correct torque spec.
Reconnect the electrical connector. If the wiring harness was found to be damaged during the diagnostic phase, repair the wiring using appropriate heat-shrink connectors or replace the damaged harness section.
Restore electrical connections and repair any harness damage found.
If the wiring and solenoid both test perfectly fine, the issue may lie within the TRANS1 controller itself. If no other problems are found, replace the transmission controller.
Replace the TRANS1 controller if it is falsely reporting an amp draw issue.
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the dash interface, and perform a test drive to verify the repair.
Ensure the fault code does not return after the repair is complete.
