Massey Ferguson 4.00.11 – Transmission Controller (TRANS1): Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue (TRANS1)
Issue description
This fault indicates an electrical anomaly in the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. The transmission controller continuously monitors the current (amperage) draw of the solenoid when it is commanded on or off. If the current draw exceeds the maximum allowable limit, it indicates a short circuit. If the current draw is too low, it indicates an open circuit, a short to ground, or a loss of power supply to the solenoid. When this fault is active, the transmission controller will typically disable the reverse clutch to prevent mechanical damage or erratic movement.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block, checking the wiring harness and connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Perform a wiring harness test using a multimeter between the TRANS1 controller and the reverse clutch solenoid to check for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power (+12V).
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid coil to check for an internal short (near zero Ohms) or open circuit (infinite/OL).
Perform a live current draw test to verify if the solenoid is receiving the command voltage from the TRANS1 module when the reverse shuttle is engaged.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.
Access the Valve Block
Remove any necessary shielding or covers to access the transmission control valve block where the directional solenoids are mounted.
Replace the Solenoid
Clean the area around the reverse clutch solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt and remove the faulty solenoid valve from the transmission block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic tests pointed to a wiring issue, repair the chafed/broken wire or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the electrical harness. Clear the fault codes from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool.
Transmission Calibration
After replacing a transmission clutch solenoid, perform a clutch calibration procedure so the controller can learn the fill times and modulation characteristics of the new valve.
