Massey Ferguson 4.00.62 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5 Transmission Controller): Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)
Issue description
The system has detected an electrical fault on the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (designated in OEM schematics as L53). Specifically, the controller is seeing an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to 0V.

Check the cause
Check for related secondary codes such as X485 or X489, which indicate an inconsistency between the Range 2 switch (L57) and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53)
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Autotronic 5 controller and the L53 solenoid valve for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause an open or short circuit
Unplug the L53 solenoid and test it with a multimeter. A healthy solenoid reads around 10 ohms. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance) or shorted (0 ohms), the solenoid has failed internally
Repair steps
Locate the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block, which is situated on the right-hand side of the gearbox.
Identify the Solenoid
Identify the Range 2 solenoid valve, which is designated as L53 in the valve bank (usually grouped with L52, L54, and L55 for the other ranges).
Disconnect Power
Ensure the tractor is turned off and disconnect the electrical connector from the L53 solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid
Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Pull the faulty solenoid valve out of the transmission housing.
Install the New Part
Lightly lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the block.
Reassembly
Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Clear Codes
Turn the tractor on, clear the fault codes from the Autotronic 5 controller, and test drive the tractor through all ranges to ensure smooth shifting and verify the repair.
