Massey Ferguson 4.00.69 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 3 Solenoid Valve

The controller detects an open circuit or a short circuit to +12 V or 0 V on the L54 solenoid circuit.

   Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller to the L54 Range 3 solenoid valve. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points.

   Check the Connector: Disconnect the plug at the L54 solenoid and inspect for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.

   Electrical Testing: Use a multimeter to test the L54 circuit for continuity. Test for a short to ground (0 V) or a short to power (+12 V).

   Ohm Test the Coil: Measure the resistance across the pins of the L54 solenoid coil. If the circuit is completely open (infinite resistance) or internally shorted, the solenoid itself has failed and requires replacement.

   Prep the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the transmission control valve block, which is situated on the right-hand side of the gearbox. Identify the L54 Range 3 solenoid valve (it is grouped alongside the L52, L53, and L55 range solenoids).

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical connector from the L54 solenoid. (Taking a photo of the wire positions before disconnecting is recommended to avoid confusion upon reassembly).

   Remove the Solenoid

   Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining hardware/flange securing the L54 solenoid and pull the valve out of the block.

   Install the New Part

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid valve into the block and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical plug, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.

   Clear and Test

   Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 4.00.69 fault code from the TRANS1 module. Start the tractor and shift through the ranges to verify that Range 3 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
