4.00.6A

Massey Ferguson 4.00.6A – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Issue description

The controller detects an electrical fault in the L55 (Range 4) solenoid circuit, such as an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to 0V (ground).

Applies to these machines

  • 5710SL
  • 5711SL
  • 5712SL
  • 5713SL
  • T4
  • 5608
  • 5609
  • 5610
  • 5611
  • 5612
  • 5613
  • 5709
  • 6445-6499
  • 6612-6616
  • 6711-6718S
  • 7614-7626
  • 7714-7726

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission control fuses (typically F4 and F29) to verify they are intact and supplying proper voltage.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 controller and the transmission solenoid bank for chafed wires causing a short.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector at the L55 solenoid and measure resistance across the pins (should be approximately 9.7 Ohms at ambient temperature).

  4. Ensure the Range 4 position switch (L59) is functioning correctly to rule out switch inconsistencies.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if required by your specific model's service manual.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the transmission control valve block on the right side of the transmission housing. The Range 4 solenoid (L55) is part of a bank of four range solenoids (L52, L53, L54, L55).

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connector from the L55 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws/flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the hydraulic block.

  4. Installation

Ensure the mounting surface and hydraulic ports are absolutely clean to prevent contamination of the wet clutch/transmission system. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid and tighten the retaining screws.

  5. Reconnection & Reset

Reconnect the electrical harness. To reset the Autotronic 5 system, turn the ignition on, move the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, and then press and release the clutch pedal.

  6. Testing

Start the tractor and shift through the ranges to confirm Range 4 engages smoothly and the fault code does not return.
