Massey Ferguson 4.00.97 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 3 (TRANS1)

Issue description

This code indicates an inconsistency between the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) and the Range 3 engaged switch (L58). The transmission controller is commanding the Range 3 solenoid to engage, but the position switch is not confirming that the physical shift has taken place (or vice versa). This can be caused by an electrical fault or a mechanical/hydraulic failure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Autotronic 5 controller to the transmission cover for open circuits, short circuits to ground (0V), or short circuits to +12V on the circuits for the L54 solenoid and L58 switch

  2. Test the Range 3 Solenoid (L54) by disconnecting it and measuring coil resistance (should be approximately 7.2 Ω ± 7%) and checking for a short to ground

  3. Test the Range 3 Switch (L58) for continuity to verify that it opens and closes correctly when the transmission is manually or pneumatically shifted into Range 3

  4. Check for low hydraulic control pressure to the solenoid or mechanical binding of the Range 3 selector rail, fork, or synchronizer inside the gearbox

Repair steps

  1. Access the Valve Block

Locate the transmission hydraulic control unit on the right-hand side of the transmission. You will see a bank of solenoids (L52, L53, L54, L55) and corresponding switches (L56, L57, L58, L59).

  2. Isolate the Range 3 Components

Identify L54 (Range 3 Solenoid) and L58 (Range 3 Switch).

  3. Electrical Repair

If the wiring harness is chafed or damaged, repair the broken wires and clear the fault code.

  4. Component Replacement

If the L54 solenoid coil is open/shorted, unbolt the solenoid flange and replace the valve. If the L58 switch fails the continuity test, unscrew it from the housing and install a new switch.

  5. Mechanical Adjustment (Advanced)

If replacing the switch and solenoid does not clear the code, a dealer technician must use a specialized selector rail adjustment tool (e.g., MF tool ref 3378805M1) and compressed air (max 4 bar) to manually actuate the shift rails and verify if the internal shift fork is physically engaging. If it is binding, the transmission will require internal teardown and shimming.

  6. Clear Codes

After repair, use the tractor's diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool to clear the 04.01.97 / T162 code.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Range 3 Solenoid Valve (Component L54)

Always provide your dealer with your tractor's serial number to ensure the correct L54 revisions are ordered, as thread pitches and connector types changed between the Dyna-4/6 and Dyna-7 generations.

  • Range 3 Position Switch (Component L58)

Always provide your dealer with your tractor's serial number to ensure the correct L58 revisions are ordered, as thread pitches and connector types changed between the Dyna-4/6 and Dyna-7 generations.

  • Selector rail adjustment tool

    3378805M1

Specialized selector rail adjustment tool used to manually actuate the shift rails.
