Massey Ferguson 4.00.98 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 4

The transmission controller has detected an inconsistency between the commanded state of the Range 4 Solenoid Valve and the feedback from the Range 4 Position Sensor (Switch). When the controller commands Range 4 to engage, the position sensor is either not confirming the engagement, or the system detects an electrical fault (such as a short circuit to 12V/0V or an open circuit) on the sensor or solenoid circuit.

   Check the Range 4 Position Sensor (L59) by verifying Pin 1 receives a 12V supply and the Pin 2 signal wire is not shorted to ground (0V) or power.

   Check the Range 4 Solenoid Valve (L55 / G26) by measuring the resistance across the solenoid pins (should be 7.2 Ω ± 7%).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Autotronic 5 module, the L59 sensor, and the L55 solenoid for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion.

   Connect Wintest or EDT diagnostic software to read the live values of the Range 4 switch and solenoid to verify if the switch state changes when manually commanding the range.

   Safely Park the Machine

   Park on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate the Components

   Locate the transmission valve block on the side of the gearbox. Identify the Range 4 Solenoid Valve (L55) and the Range 4 Position Sensor (L59).

   Inspect and Clean

   Disconnect the electrical connectors for both the sensor and the solenoid. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and inspect for pushed-back pins.

   Test Components

   Perform the multimeter checks (voltage to the sensor, resistance on the solenoid).

   Replace Faulty Component

   If the solenoid fails the resistance test, unbolt the solenoid coil/valve assembly from the transmission block and install a new one. If the sensor is dead or shorted, unthread the L59 position sensor from the transmission housing and install the replacement.

   Reconnect the wiring harnesses. Use the Wintest/EDT tool to clear the 04.02.98 fault code.

   Start the tractor and cycle through the transmission ranges to ensure Range 4 engages smoothly without triggering the fault code.
