Massey Ferguson 4.00.9B – TRANS2: Issue With Powershift N Solenoid Supply Voltage

Issue description

The transmission control unit has detected an electrical fault—such as an open circuit, short circuit, or out-of-range voltage—on the power supply circuit dedicated to the "N" (Neutral/Range) Powershift solenoid. When this solenoid fails or loses power, the tractor may experience harsh shifting, get stuck in neutral, or refuse to engage forward/reverse gears.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the transmission/hydraulic fluid is at the correct level, as low fluid can mimic engagement issues.

  2. Trace the wiring from the TRANS2 module to the Powershift N solenoid. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.

  3. Disconnect the solenoid plug and check for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins.

  4. Test the supply voltage at the solenoid connector while the tractor is keyed on and the transmission is commanded to shift. You should see a standard 12V supply. If voltage is erratic (e.g., 4-6 volts), you likely have a wiring or relay issue, not a bad solenoid.

  5. Ensure the solenoid has a clean, low-resistance path to ground.

  6. Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the solenoid coil pins. An infinite reading means the internal coil is broken (open), and the solenoid must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the transmission system before opening the hydraulic block.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission valve block around the Powershift N solenoid. Any dirt entering the hydraulic circuit can cause premature wet-clutch or valve failure.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove

    Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil and valve cartridge in place. Carefully extract the solenoid from the valve block.

  5. Install

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the block and tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specs.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is seated.

  7. Test and Calibrate

    Top up any lost transmission fluid. Connect Massey Ferguson Wintest or EDT diagnostic software to clear the 4.00.9B fault code. It is highly recommended to perform a clutch/transmission calibration after replacing transmission solenoids to ensure smooth engagement.
