Massey Ferguson 4.01.0F – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

The transmission controller continuously monitors the electrical current (amperage) drawn by the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls outside the expected parameters (typically lower than the limit), it triggers this code. This underlying condition usually points to an open circuit, a short to ground, a loss of power supply to the solenoid, or a failed solenoid coil.

   Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.

   Disconnect the plug at the reverse clutch solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the reverse clutch solenoid coil. Compare the reading to OEM specifications (an infinite reading indicates an internally open coil; a reading of 0 ohms indicates a dead short).

   Verify that the solenoid is receiving the correct voltage from the transmission controller when the tractor is commanded into reverse.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the transmission controller.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.

   Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block.

   Clean Valve Block

   Clean the area around the valve block thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic system.

   Remove Solenoid

   Remove the retaining bolt/clip holding the solenoid in place and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out.

   Install New Solenoid

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque the retaining fastener to OEM spec.

   Reconnect Power

   Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery.

   Calibration

   Clear the fault codes via the diagnostic menu. You must perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure using the tractor's onboard terminal or dealer diagnostic tool so the TRANS1 module can learn the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
