Massey Ferguson 4.01.10 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Voltage Issue
Issue description
This code indicates an electrical fault in the circuit controlling the reverse clutch solenoid. The controller has detected that the voltage or current draw is out of the expected range, which typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power (+12V), or a failed solenoid coil. When this code is active, the transmission will likely prevent engagement of the reverse gear to protect the clutch packs.

Check the cause
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and ensure the tractor cannot move.
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid for chafing, pinched wires, or heat damage.
Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.
Measure the resistance across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid coil using a multimeter. An infinite reading indicates an open circuit (failed coil), while a reading near zero indicates a dead short.
Turn the key to the ON position (engine off), command the tractor into reverse, and check if the TRANS1 module is sending the correct voltage to the solenoid connector. If no voltage is present, the issue is in the wiring harness or the TRANS1 module itself.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorting.
Clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the reverse clutch solenoid.
Remove the retaining nut or bolt securing the solenoid coil to the valve stem.
Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.
Note: If the hydraulic valve cartridge itself is sticking, you may need to unthread the cartridge from the block, but for a "Voltage Issue", replacing just the electrical coil is usually sufficient.
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications.
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.
Reconnect the battery.
Start the tractor, clear the fault codes from the TRANS1 module, and test the reverse gear engagement to ensure the code does not return.
