4.01.11

Massey Ferguson 4.01.11 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously monitors the electrical current (amperage) drawn by the reverse clutch solenoid. If the current draw falls below the expected limit or is not detected when the driver circuit is energized, the system logs this code. This typically indicates an open circuit, a short to ground, a failed solenoid coil, or a loss of power supply to the solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the parking brake is engaged, and the machine cannot move during testing

  2. Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block. Disconnect the wiring harness and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid pins. An infinite reading indicates an open internal coil (failed solenoid), while a reading of 0 indicates a dead short

  4. Trace the wiring from the solenoid back to the TRANS1 controller. Look for chafed wires or pinched harnesses that could be shorting to the tractor chassis (ground)

  5. With the key on and the shuttle lever shifted to reverse, verify that the solenoid connector is receiving the correct supply voltage (+12V) from the controller

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the engine, relieve any residual hydraulic pressure, and clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty reverse clutch solenoid.

  3. Removal

Remove the retaining screws or bolts holding the solenoid valve to the transmission housing/valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid straight out.

  4. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission/hydraulic fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block.

  5. Torque

Install the retaining screws and torque them to the manufacturer's specification (typically 25 - 35 Nm, depending on the exact valve block version).

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid.

  7. Calibration

Start the tractor and bring the transmission fluid up to operating temperature. You must perform a clutch/transmission calibration procedure using the tractor's dashboard display or a diagnostic tool to ensure smooth engagement of the new reverse clutch solenoid.
