4.01.40

Massey Ferguson 4.01.40 – Transmission Module (TRANS): Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS1)

Issue description

The transmission control module is receiving erratic, out-of-range, or missing signals from the transmission speed sensor. This sensor measures the speed of the shaft and transmits it to the indicator/controller to manage transmission shifting and performance.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) and open the Massey Ferguson WinTest software. Navigate to the 'Gearbox' tab to monitor the active and requested values of the speed sensor while the tractor is running.

  2. Connect the diagnostic breakout harness (OEM tool # X899980246204) between the sensor and the tractor's wiring harness.

  3. Connect a multimeter between connectors 1 and 2 of the harness and switch the ignition on.

  4. Verify the multimeter reads 0V initially, and then jumps to 12V–14V when the sensor is actuated (or when pressing on the ball of the sensor). If the voltage does not change or the sensor reads 'open' when it should be closed, the sensor has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Drain Fluid (If Necessary)

Depending on the exact location of the sensor on your specific model's transmission housing, you may need to partially drain the transmission fluid to prevent spills when the sensor is removed.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty transmission speed sensor. Unbolt or unthread the sensor from the transmission housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Insert the new OEM speed sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the wiring harness back into the new sensor.

  6. Refill Fluid

Top off the transmission fluid to the correct level if any was drained.

  7. Clear Codes & Verify

Connect the AGCO WinTest software to clear the 04.01.40 fault code. Test drive the tractor while monitoring the speed sensor values in the software to ensure the new sensor is reading correctly.
