4.01.61

Massey Ferguson 4.01.61 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / TRANS1: Issue With Range 1 Solenoid Valve

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical fault or logic error regarding the Range 1 transmission solenoid (L52). This can be caused by an open circuit in the solenoid wiring, a short circuit to +12V or 0V (ground), or an inconsistency between the Range 1 switch (L56) and the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the L52 Range 1 solenoid valve for chafed wires, corrosion, or pinched lines causing a short to ground (0V) or power (+12V).

  2. Disconnect the L52 solenoid and test the coil resistance using a multimeter. It should measure around 10 Ohms; an open or shorted reading indicates an internally faulty solenoid.

  3. Verify the operation of the Range 1 switch (L56) to ensure it is sending the correct signal to the Autotronic 5 controller, as a mismatch between the switch and valve can trigger this code.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Clean the Area

Locate the transmission valve block housing the range solenoids (L52 is grouped with L53, L54, and L55). Thoroughly clean the surrounding area to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52). Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid to the valve block. Pull the solenoid valve straight out.

  4. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new valve into the block, fit the flange, and tighten the retaining screws securely.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Validation

Start the tractor and test the transmission by shifting through all ranges (specifically Range 1) to ensure the fault code clears and the tractor engages the gear smoothly.
