Massey Ferguson 4.01.62 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)
Issue description
An electrical or logical fault with the transmission's Range 2 solenoid (L53), indicating an open circuit, a short circuit to +12 V or 0 V, or an inconsistency between the Range 2 switch (L57) and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53).

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose connections.
Using a multimeter, check the wiring between the Autotronic 5 module and the L53 solenoid for continuity. Test for a short to ground (0 V) or a short to power (+12 V).
Measure the resistance of the L53 solenoid coil. If it reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or is shorted, the solenoid is internally faulty.
Verify that the Range 2 position switch (L56/L57 cluster) is functioning correctly and sending the proper signal to the Autotronic 5 module, as an inconsistency between the switch and valve can trigger this code.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Solenoid
Access the transmission control valve block. The Range 2 solenoid is identified as L53 (typically grouped with L52, L54, and L55 for ranges 1, 3, and 4).
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the L53 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the gearbox housing. Have a drain pan ready to catch any residual transmission fluid.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and reinstall the flange and retaining screws (tighten to OEM torque specs).
Reassembly
Reconnect the electrical harness, reconnect the battery, and clear the fault codes from the Autotronic 5 module. Test drive the tractor through all ranges to ensure smooth shifting and verify the code does not return.
