Massey Ferguson 4.01.6C – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch Signal

The controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing electrical signal from the sensor responsible for detecting when the transmission has successfully shifted into Range 2.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission range position switch for chafing, rodent damage, or breaks

   Disconnect the switch and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out terminals

   Test the switch's continuity using a multimeter by manually engaging Range 2 to verify that the switch transitions states correctly

   Check the signal wire from the switch back to the TRANS1 module for continuity, ensuring it is not shorted to ground or power

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Switch

   Locate the Range 2 position switch on the transmission housing block. Clean the area around the switch to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.

   Removal

   Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical harness from the switch. Use an appropriately sized wrench or deep socket to unthread the switch from the transmission housing. Note: Have a shop rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

   Installation

   Thread the new transmission range position switch into the housing by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 4.01.6C fault code from the TRANS1 module.

7. 7

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor and shift through the transmission ranges to verify that Range 2 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
