Massey Ferguson 4.01.9B – TRANS2: Issue With Powershift N Solenoid Supply Voltage (TRANS2)
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting an incorrect voltage supply (either too high, too low, or an open/short circuit) on the circuit powering the "N" (Powershift/Range) solenoid. This prevents the transmission from shifting ranges electronically and can cause the tractor to refuse to move or become stuck in a single range.

Check the cause
Verify the tractor's base voltage, ensuring the battery is outputting a healthy 12V and the alternator is charging correctly.
Check the wiring harness running from the TRANS2 module to the side of the transmission for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground or an open circuit.
Disconnect the plug at the Powershift N solenoid, clean the terminals with electrical contact cleaner and a wire brush, and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid pins to determine if the coil is open (infinite resistance) or shorted.
Test the indirect transmission switches linked to these solenoids to ensure they are sending the correct signal to the TRANS2 module.
Repair steps
Locate the Solenoid Bank
The range change / powershift solenoids are located externally on the side of the transmission housing (typically a bank of four solenoids on Dyna-6 models).
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the side of the transmission around the solenoid bank to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent accidental shorts during the repair.
Remove the Solenoid
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty "N" solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts holding the solenoid/electrovalve to the transmission block.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Insert the solenoid into the valve block and torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the electrical plug, reconnect the battery, and clear the 4.01.9B fault code using a diagnostic tool. Test drive the tractor to ensure smooth range shifting.
