Massey Ferguson 4.01.B8 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS1) / Autotronic 5: Issue With Intermediate Speed Sensor Values (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting an implausible or missing signal from the intermediate speed sensor (TR25 or TR23). The system typically logs this error when no intermediate speed is detected despite the current forward speed being greater than 0, or if there is a discrepancy between the intermediate speed sensor and the forward speed sensor for more than a set duration (e.g., 6 seconds).

Check the cause
Attempt a system reset by moving the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, then pressing and releasing the clutch pedal
Perform a resistance test by disconnecting the sensor and measuring across Pin 1 (Signal) and Pin 2 (Ground). Resistance should be 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms when the tractor is stopped
Check for alternating voltage (AC) output from the sensor while the pinion/ring gear is rotating
Inspect the wiring harness, contacts, and connections leading back to the Autotronic 5 unit for open circuits, short circuits, or backed-out pins
Use Massey Ferguson's Wintest software to monitor the active intermediate speed sensor value in RPMs to verify if the controller is receiving the signal
Repair steps
Locate the intermediate speed sensor on the transmission housing.
Apply a small amount of Loctite 5922 to the threads of the new or existing sensor.
Screw the sensor fully into the housing until it bottoms out (in abutment) against the internal pinion/gear.
Carefully unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to establish the correct air gap.
Tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm to lock the sensor in place.
