Massey Ferguson 4.02.04 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Issue With Signal Voltage From Clutch Pedal Sensor (TRANS)

This fault code indicates that the tractor's computer is receiving an abnormal, erratic, or out-of-range voltage signal from the clutch pedal position sensor. When the signal drops out, shorts, or goes out of the expected calibration range, this fault is triggered, which can result in erratic shifting, loss of drive, or safety systems (like the PTO interlock) failing to engage.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the clutch pedal assembly in the cab. Check the sensor for physical damage, loose mounting hardware, or heavy dust/moisture ingress.

   Wiring & Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or pushed-out pins. Trace the wiring harness back toward the TRANS module to check for chafing or short circuits.

   Voltage Sweep Test: Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving its reference voltage (usually 10-30V input depending on the specific system). Back-probe the signal wire and slowly depress the clutch pedal. The voltage should sweep smoothly (e.g., 0.5V to 4.5V) without any sudden dropouts or dead spots.

   Attempt Calibration: Before replacing parts, attempt to recalibrate the clutch pedal sensor using the tractor's instrument panel diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool. Sometimes the sensor simply drifts out of its calibrated parameters.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the clutch pedal position sensor mounted on the side of the clutch pedal pivot assembly inside the cab.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolts/screws holding the sensor to the pedal bracket and slide the sensor off the pivot shaft.

   Install the New Sensor

   Slide the new sensor onto the shaft, ensuring the internal tangs align correctly with the pedal mechanism. Secure it with the mounting hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.

   Mandatory Calibration

   You must perform a clutch pedal sensor calibration procedure after installation. This is done via the tractor's DOT matrix instrument panel or a diagnostic laptop. This teaches the TRANS module the new sensor's exact minimum (pedal up) and maximum (pedal down) voltage values.
