Massey Ferguson 4.02.0B – TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission control module has detected that the electrical current (amperage) being drawn by the forward clutch solenoid is outside of the expected or specified range. This usually indicates a failing solenoid coil (internal short or high resistance), a short/open in the wiring harness, or a poor connection.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor's battery is fully charged and passes a load test, as low system voltage can cause erratic solenoid amp draw readings.
Locate the forward clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block, disconnect the harness, and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.
Check the wiring harness between the TRANS1 controller and the solenoid for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the forward clutch solenoid pins and compare it to the reverse clutch solenoid to check for a degraded coil.
Supply direct 12V power to the solenoid momentarily to measure the actual amp draw and listen for a solid 'click'.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the solenoid is removed.
Remove the Solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector from the forward clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the solenoid to the valve block and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Massey Ferguson transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes & Calibrate
Turn the key on and clear the 4.02.0B fault code. Because a transmission control component was replaced, you must perform a PowerShuttle / Transmission Calibration procedure via the dashboard screen to ensure proper forward engagement progressivity.
