Massey Ferguson 4.02.0E – TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Low Amps
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting a lower-than-expected electrical current (amperage draw) on the circuit that powers the forward clutch solenoid. This typically points to high electrical resistance, an open circuit, a failing solenoid coil, or a damaged/broken wire in the harness.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the forward clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block for corrosion, dirt, pushed-out pins, or wire chafing.
Disconnect the solenoid and measure the resistance (ohms) of the forward clutch solenoid coil with a multimeter. A high resistance reading or an open circuit (OL) confirms a failed solenoid coil.
Perform a component swap test by swapping the forward clutch solenoid with the identical reverse clutch solenoid. Clear codes and test the tractor. If the fault code changes to a Reverse Clutch Solenoid Low Amps code, the solenoid is definitively the culprit. If the code remains on the forward circuit, the issue is in the wiring harness or the TRANS1 controller.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the forward clutch solenoid (refer to the service manual diagram if necessary to distinguish it from the reverse or range solenoids).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the forward clutch solenoid.
Removal
Remove the retaining nut or clip securing the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem. (Note: If replacing the entire electrovalve/cartridge assembly rather than just the coil, unthread the cartridge from the valve block, being prepared for a small amount of hydraulic fluid loss).
Installation
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining hardware. If installing a full cartridge, lubricate the O-rings with clean hydraulic fluid before threading it into the block.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks and locks securely.
Testing
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's dash interface. Start the tractor and shift between forward and reverse to verify smooth engagement and ensure the code does not return.
