Massey Ferguson 4.02.10 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Voltage Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously monitors the electrical circuit of the reverse clutch solenoid. This code is triggered when the controller detects an abnormal voltage or current draw on this specific circuit, typically indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to +12V, or a loss of power supply to the solenoid coil, preventing the transmission from properly engaging or modulating the reverse clutch.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 controller to the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block for chafed wires, breaks, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the electrical plug at the reverse clutch solenoid and check for water ingress, dirt, or corroded/loose pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid (an infinite reading indicates an open internal coil, while 0 ohms indicates a dead short).
Back-probe the connector and verify that the solenoid is receiving the correct voltage signal from the TRANS1 controller when the shuttle lever is moved to the reverse position.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Locate valve block
Locate the forward/reverse power shuttle valve block on the side of the transmission.
Clean area
Thoroughly clean the area around the reverse clutch solenoid to prevent any dirt or debris from entering the sensitive transmission hydraulic system.
Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the solenoid.
Remove fasteners
Remove the retaining bolts or clips securing the solenoid valve to the block.
Extract solenoid
Carefully extract the faulty solenoid.
Lubricate O-rings
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean, OEM-specified transmission/hydraulic fluid.
Install new solenoid
Insert the new solenoid and tighten the retaining fasteners to the factory torque specification.
Reconnect components
Reconnect the electrical connector and the tractor's battery.
Clear fault code
Clear the stored 4.02.10 fault code from the TRANS1 module using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool.
Perform calibration
Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure so the TRANS1 controller can relearn the fill times and engagement points for the reverse clutch to ensure smooth shifting.
