Massey Ferguson 4.02.11 – Transmission Controller (TRANS1): Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls outside the expected parameters (e.g., lower than the limit), it indicates that the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply. This prevents the transmission from properly engaging the reverse directional clutch, which relies on a precise PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) sequence for smooth shifting.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked securely, the engine is off (or safely idling if live testing is required), and the machine cannot move while performing tests.
Check if the reverse clutch solenoid is actually receiving a command to energize when the shuttle lever is moved to the reverse position.
Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 controller to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for rubbed wires, broken connections, or corrosion that could cause an open circuit or a short to ground.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the solenoid coil and the amp draw of the circuit. Compare the readings to the OEM specifications to determine if the solenoid coil has failed internally.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical surges during the repair.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block (usually accessible on the side of the transmission housing).
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector between the TRANS1 module and the solenoid, repair the harness and clear the codes.
Replace the Solenoid
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the amp draw/resistance test, remove the retaining bolt/clip holding the faulty reverse clutch solenoid and pull it from the valve block.
Install New Part
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, insert it into the valve block, and secure it. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. After replacing transmission solenoids, a clutch calibration procedure is often required using the tractor's diagnostic software (e.g., Wintest) to ensure the TRANS1 controller learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid.
