Massey Ferguson 4.02.61 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 1 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

An electrical fault in the circuit for the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) indicating an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to ground (0V). It can also be triggered by an inconsistency between the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) and the Range 1 position switch (L56).

   Visually inspect the L52 (Range 1) solenoid valve on the right-hand side of the gearbox, checking the wiring harness and connector for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Test the circuit between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the L52 solenoid using a multimeter to check for continuity, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power (+12V).

   Measure the resistance of the L52 solenoid coil to determine if it has failed internally.

   Verify the Range 1 switch (L56) is functioning correctly and not stuck, as an inconsistency between the L52 valve command and L56 switch state can trigger this code.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Valve

   Access the right-hand side of the gearbox where the range control selector rails are located. Identify the bank of four solenoid valves (L52, L53, L54, L55), where L52 is the Range 1 / Low Speed Range valve.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the L52 solenoid valve. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the transmission housing, being prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic oil.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new L52 solenoid valve into the port. Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connector securely.

   Post-Repair

   Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use a diagnostic tool (or the dashboard interface) to clear the 04.02.61 fault code. Test drive the tractor through all ranges to ensure smooth shifting and verify the code does not return.
