4.02.62

Massey Ferguson 4.02.62 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve

Issue description

The transmission controller detects an electrical fault in the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53 or G27), indicating an open circuit, a short circuit to +12 V, or a short circuit to 0 V.

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) and measure the resistance across the pins (should be 7.2 Ω ± 7%).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 transmission controller and the L53 solenoid valve for continuity, short to ground (0 V), or short to power (+12 V).

  3. Verify the operation of the Range 2 position switch (L57 / X489) to ensure there is no inconsistency between the switch and the solenoid valve.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Valve

Locate the transmission valve block. Depending on the exact model, the L53 Range 2 solenoid valve is typically located on the right-hand hydraulic cover or directly on the robotic mechanical gearbox housing alongside Range 1 (L52), Range 3 (L54), and Range 4 (L55) solenoids.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the L53 solenoid valve.

  4. Remove

Remove the retaining screws and the flange securing the solenoid valve to the block.

  5. Replace

Extract the faulty solenoid valve. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission oil and insert it into the valve block.

  6. Reassemble

Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear Codes

Turn on the ignition and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 4.02.62 fault code from the Autotronic 5 controller. Test drive the tractor to ensure Range 2 engages smoothly without error.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Range 2 Solenoid Valve (Component ID: L53 or G27)

Ensure you are replacing the correct solenoid in the bank. The solenoids are usually grouped together (L52, L53, L54, L55). L53 is specifically for Range 2.
