Massey Ferguson 4.02.96 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 2 (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission controller detects an inconsistency or mismatch between the state of the Range 2 position switch (sensor) and the commanded state of the Range 2 solenoid valve.

Check the cause
Verify that the wiring connectors for the 4 transmission solenoid valves and the 4 range position sensors are plugged into their correct, corresponding positions
Test the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) for an open circuit or a short circuit to +12 V or 0 V
Check the Range 2 position sensor (L57 or X489) for proper voltage (Pin 1: 12V supply, Pin 2: signal)
Perform a hydraulic pressure test at transmission test port M9 to ensure the Range 2 engaging pressure is correct when the solenoid is commanded
Repair steps
Inspect Wiring
Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS1 module to the transmission side cover where the range solenoids and switches are located. Look for chafed wires or corroded pins at the L53 (solenoid) and L57 (switch) connectors.
Test the Solenoid
Disconnect the Range 2 solenoid (L53) and measure its coil resistance with a multimeter. If the coil is open, shorted, or out of specification, the solenoid must be replaced.
Test the Switch
If the solenoid tests fine and hydraulic pressure at port M9 is within spec during engagement, the Range 2 position sensor (L57) is likely failing to report the physical shift to the TRANS1 module.
Replace Faulty Component
Relieve hydraulic system pressure and disconnect the battery. Remove the faulty solenoid valve or position switch from the transmission housing.
Reassembly
Install the new component (ensure clean hydraulic fluid to prevent premature failure of the new solenoid). Reconnect the battery and clear the fault codes using the Wintest or EDT diagnostics software.
