Massey Ferguson 4.02.9B – Transmission Control Module (TRANS2): Issue With Powershift N Solenoid Supply Voltage
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an electrical anomaly—such as a voltage drop, open circuit, or short circuit—in the power supply circuit dedicated to the Powershift "N" Solenoid. When this occurs, the transmission may fail to shift properly or default to a safe mode, leaving the operator stuck in a specific gear or neutral.

Check the cause
Verify battery and charging system voltage (approx. 12.6V resting, 13.5V-14.5V running) to rule out low system voltage triggering false codes
Trace the wiring harness from the TRANS2 module to the transmission valve block, looking for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points
Disconnect the harness at the Powershift N Solenoid and inspect pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals
With the key ON, use a multimeter to check for proper supply voltage at the solenoid connector
Measure the internal resistance of the solenoid coil across its pins; an open reading or dead short indicates a failed coil
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the specific Powershift N Solenoid (refer to a service manual diagram for the exact position on the block, as there are multiple solenoids for forward/reverse and PTO functions).
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid with brake cleaner or a degreaser to prevent dirt from entering the open hydraulic ports.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid
Remove the retaining bolts or snap-ring clip holding the solenoid in the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid straight out. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid will leak out.
Install the New Part
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block, ensuring it seats fully without pinching the O-rings.
Secure and Reconnect
Reinstall the retaining bolts/clip and torque to OEM specifications. Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks.
Test
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, check for leaks around the new solenoid, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 4.02.9B fault code. Perform a test drive, cycling through the powershift gears to ensure smooth operation and that the code does not return.
