Massey Ferguson 4.03.04 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Issue With Signal Voltage From Clutch Pedal Sensor

The control unit is receiving an electrical signal from the clutch pedal position sensor (often designated as sensor X68) that is out of the expected range. The voltage is either too high (short to power) or too low (short to ground or open circuit), which prevents the controller from accurately determining the clutch pedal's position.

   Inspect the clutch pedal sensor (located at the base of the clutch pedal linkage) and its wiring harness for physical damage, rubbing, or debris interference.

   Disconnect the sensor and check for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins inside the connector.

   With the key ON, use a multimeter to verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) from the controller and has a solid ground.

   Back-probe the signal wire and perform a signal sweep test by slowly depressing and releasing the clutch pedal. The voltage should change smoothly without dropouts or spikes. If the voltage jumps erratically or stays static, the sensor has failed internally.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

   Removal

   Locate the clutch pedal sensor on the pedal linkage assembly. Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the mounting screws/brackets holding the sensor in place and remove the faulty unit.

   Installation

   Install the new OEM clutch pedal sensor and secure the mounting hardware. Reconnect the electrical harness and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   A new sensor must be calibrated to the tractor's transmission controller so it learns the new 'fully released' and 'fully depressed' values. Warm the transmission oil to at least 50°C (122°F). Enter the tractor's service/diagnostic menu via the dashboard controls. Navigate to the 'Clutch Pedal Calibration' screen. Follow the on-screen prompts, which generally require you to leave the pedal up to register the top position, and then fully depress and hold the pedal to register the bottom position. Turn off the key-start to store the calibration settings.
