Massey Ferguson 4.03.13 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below the minimum limit, the controller logs this code, meaning the circuit is "open." This is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected wiring harness plug, a loss of power supply to the circuit, or a solenoid coil that has failed internally (burnt out/open).

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and the wheels are securely chocked

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 controller to the transmission valve block for chafed wires, rodent damage, or loose/corroded connector pins at the reverse clutch solenoid

  3. Use a multimeter to check if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving voltage when the tractor is commanded into reverse

  4. Test the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid itself. An infinite reading (OL) confirms the solenoid coil is internally open and must be replaced

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the machine on a flat surface, engage the park brake, turn off the engine, and chock the wheels.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the reverse clutch solenoid among the bank of solenoids.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical harness plug from the faulty reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt or clip securing the solenoid to the valve block, and pull the solenoid cartridge out.

  4. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Calibration

    After replacing transmission solenoids, it is highly recommended to perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's display or diagnostic software to ensure smooth clutch engagement and prevent jumpy shifting.
