Massey Ferguson 4.03.61 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 1 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault—specifically an open circuit or a short circuit (+12 V or 0 V)—in the circuit for the Range 1 Solenoid Valve (designated in OEM schematics as L52 or EV1). It can also be triggered if the controller detects an inconsistency between the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) and the Range 1 position switch (L56).

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the L52 Range 1 solenoid valve for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Disconnect the L52 solenoid valve and measure the resistance across the coil pins using a multimeter (an infinite reading indicates an open internal coil; a reading of 0 indicates a short).

   Verify that the L56 Range 1 position switch is functioning correctly and is not stuck or damaged, as a disagreement between the switch and solenoid can trigger this fault.

   Locate the Valve

   The L52 Range 1 solenoid valve (along with L53, L54, and L55) is located on the right-hand side of the gearbox housing, controlling the selector rail movement.

   Preparation

   Clean the area around the solenoid valves thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the L52 solenoid valve. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Carefully extract the L52 solenoid valve from the transmission housing.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new L52 solenoid valve into the port. Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Validation

   Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (or via the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu if supported) and test drive the tractor, shifting through Range 1 to ensure the code does not return.
