Massey Ferguson 4.03.6A – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault or operational inconsistency in the circuit for the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55). The system typically logs this code when it detects an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V or 0V, or an inconsistency between the Range 4 position switch (L59) and the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55).

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) ECU and the L55 Range 4 solenoid valve for rubbed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Use a multimeter to test the L55 circuit for a short to ground (0V) or a short to power (+12V).
Measure the resistance of the L55 solenoid coil to check for an internal failure (an open coil will trigger this code).
Check the Range 4 position switch (L59) for proper operation, as a stuck switch can cause the ECU to flag an issue with the L55 valve.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission fluid to cool. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control selector rails and solenoid block, which is situated on the right-hand side of the gearbox.
Identify the L55 Solenoid
The block contains four range solenoids grouped together: L52 (Range 1), L53 (Range 2), L54 (Range 3), and L55 (Range 4). Identify the L55 valve.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the L55 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place. Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the transmission housing.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new valve into the port, ensuring it seats fully.
Reassembly
Reinstall the retaining flange and tighten the screws to the OEM specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Calibration/Clearing
Turn the ignition on and use a diagnostic tool (such as Wintest) or the tractor's dashboard diagnostic menu to clear the 4.03.6A fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure Range 4 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
