4.03.98

Massey Ferguson 4.03.98 – TRANS1 (Transmission Control Module): Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 4

Issue description

The transmission control system has detected an electrical incoherence, short circuit, or mechanical mismatch between the Range 4 solenoid valve and its corresponding engagement switch. If the switch signal does not match the commanded solenoid state, the tractor may refuse to shift between ranges or fail to move altogether.

Applies to these machines

  • 5710SL
  • 5711SL
  • 5712SL

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission range solenoid bank on the side of the transmission for heavy rust or physical damage on the Range 4 solenoid.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Range 4 solenoid and switch for rubbed wires, short circuits, or loose/corroded pins.

  3. Test the Range 4 engaged switch for proper continuity, as switch failure commonly mimics a failed solenoid.

Repair steps

  1. Safely park the tractor.

Park on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate the transmission control solenoid bank.

It is located on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Clean the area around the Range 4 solenoid and switch.

Thoroughly clean to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission valve body.

  4. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.

Disconnect from the faulty Range 4 solenoid and the range switch.

  5. Remove the faulty components.

Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty solenoid valve (and/or the switch, depending on your diagnostic findings).

  6. Lubricate the O-rings.

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid/switch with clean transmission fluid.

  7. Install the new replacement part(s).

Install and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness.

    Reconnect the electrical harness securely.

  9. Clear fault codes and test drive.

Clear the fault codes from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor through all ranges once it reaches operating temperature to ensure the issue is resolved.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Transmission Control Solenoid (Range Solenoid Valve)

    4363356M3

    Supersedes older part numbers: 3794719M4, 3794719M3, 3794719M2, 3794719M1. Fits Dyna-4 and Dyna-6 transmissions across the 4700, 5400, 5600, 5700, 6400, 6600, 6700, 7600, and 7700 series.

  • Range Engaged Switch (Indirect Transmission Switch)

Often replaced alongside the solenoid if the switch is the point of failure.
