Massey Ferguson 4.03.9A – TRANS2: Issue With Powershift L Solenoid Supply Voltage

Issue description

Electrical fault—specifically a supply voltage irregularity (such as an open circuit, short, or out-of-range voltage)—detected on the circuit powering the "L" solenoid of the powershift transmission.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the transmission fluid level is correct, as low fluid can cause the tractor to stop moving or trigger pressure/shifting faults

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the TRANS2 module to the Powershift L Solenoid for chafed wires, loose connector pins, or corrosion that could cause an open circuit or voltage drop

  3. Use Massey Ferguson's diagnostic software (such as Wintest) to read the active and requested voltage values for the transmission solenoids to confirm if the module is sending the correct voltage

  4. Listen for unusual noises from the clutch and inspect the transmission linkage to rule out mechanical binding

Repair steps

  1. Locate the solenoid

    Locate the Powershift L Solenoid on the transmission valve block.

  2. Disconnect the connector

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid.

  3. Test supply voltage

    Using a multimeter, test the supply voltage at the harness connector while the tractor is keyed ON. If voltage is out of spec, the issue lies in the wiring harness or the TRANS2 module.

  4. Test internal resistance

    If the supply voltage from the harness is correct, test the internal resistance (ohms) of the Powershift L Solenoid itself.

  5. Unbolt the solenoid

    If the solenoid fails the resistance test or is internally shorted, unbolt the retaining bracket/screws for the solenoid valve.

  6. Replace the solenoid

    Remove the faulty solenoid and replace it with a new OEM unit.

  7. Clear fault code and test

    Clear the 4.03.9A / 04.02.9A fault code using the diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor to ensure proper powershift operation.
