4.X.0A

Massey Ferguson 4.X.0A – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / TRANS1: X556 - Forward solenoid valve: The forward solenoid valve is short-circuited to +12 V.

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting a continuous or unexpected +12V power supply on the circuit for the forward directional clutch solenoid (designated as component X556). This prevents the controller from properly modulating the forward clutch, which can result in harsh engagement, failure to move forward, or the transmission defaulting to neutral for safety.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the X556 Forward Solenoid Valve for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could bridge the signal wire to a +12V power wire.

  2. Perform a harness voltage test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the X556 solenoid, turn the ignition key ON (engine off), and measure voltage on the signal wire. A +12V reading indicates the harness is shorted to power.

  3. Measure the internal resistance of the X556 solenoid pins to check for an internal short inside the solenoid coil.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Chock the wheels.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission valve block around the X556 forward solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during removal.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the X556 solenoid.

  4. Removal

Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring securing the solenoid to the valve block. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the bore. Have a drain pan ready to catch a small amount of residual transmission fluid.

  5. Installation

Discard the old O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Massey Ferguson transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the bore, ensuring it seats fully without pinching the O-rings.

  6. Secure and Reconnect

Reinstall the retaining bolt/clip and torque to OEM specifications. Plug the electrical connector back in.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 4.X.0A fault code from the TRANS1 module. Start the tractor, check for leaks, and test forward/reverse shuttle operation to confirm the repair.

Parts you might need
