Massey Ferguson 4.X.0E – TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Low Amps / Incorrect Command
Issue description
The controller is commanding the forward clutch solenoid valve (identified in OEM schematics as component X556) to engage, but the measured electrical current (amperage) cannot reach the specified value. This typically indicates an open circuit, high resistance in the wiring, or a failing solenoid coil that is not drawing the correct amperage.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the X556 Forward Solenoid Valve for chafed wires, open circuits, or loose/corroded pins at the connector
Measure the resistance (Ohms) of the X556 solenoid coil to check for an internal open or infinite resistance
Verify that the TRANS1 module is sending the correct supply voltage to the solenoid when forward travel is commanded
Check the transmission oil level and ensure the high-pressure transmission oil filters are not blocked
Repair steps
Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing and identify the X556 Forward Clutch Solenoid.
Disconnect the electrical harness from the X556 solenoid.
Clean the connector contacts with an approved electrical contact cleaner.
If the connector is damaged, splice in a new pigtail connector.
Remove the retaining nut/bolt securing the solenoid coil to the valve stem.
Perform this step if the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test.
Remove the faulty X556 solenoid and install the replacement part.
Reconnect the electrical harness securely.
Clear the fault codes from the TRANS1 module using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a dealer service tool.
Start the tractor and test the forward/reverse shuttle shifting.
Ensure the clutch engages smoothly and the specified current value is successfully obtained without triggering the code.

Specific OEM part numbers vary depending on the exact transmission variant. OEM manuals explicitly state that using genuine Massey Ferguson parts is essential for transmission solenoids; aftermarket solenoids may have different coil resistance values.
