Massey Ferguson 4.X.12 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected an electrical current (amperage) draw that falls outside of the expected parameters on the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. This typically points to a failing solenoid coil (such as an internal short or open circuit) or a wiring harness issue (chafed wires, poor ground, or a corroded connector).

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked safely, the engine is off, and the wheels are chocked so the machine cannot move during testing.
Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission valve block on the side of the gearbox. Look for rub points, melted insulation, or corroded connector pins at the reverse clutch solenoid.
Disconnect the solenoid and measure the resistance (ohms) across the coil pins using a multimeter. Compare this against OEM specifications to check for an internal short or an open coil.
Verify that the solenoid is receiving the correct voltage (usually a 12V PWM signal) when the reverse shuttle is engaged.
Ensure the forward/reverse shuttle lever and the bottom-of-clutch switch are functioning correctly. Faulty inputs from the pedal box can sometimes interrupt drive signals.
Repair steps
Locate the transmission control valve block
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing.
Identify the reverse clutch solenoid
Identify the reverse clutch solenoid (it is usually grouped in a bank of four solenoids handling range changes and directional drive).
Disconnect the electrical harness connector
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty solenoid.
Remove the retaining nut or fastener
Remove the retaining nut or fastener securing the solenoid coil to the valve cartridge.
Slide the old solenoid coil off
Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem. (Note: If the mechanical valve cartridge itself is sticking, you may need to unscrew the cartridge from the block—be prepared for minor hydraulic fluid loss if you do this).
Install the new solenoid coil
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and secure it with the retaining nut.
Reconnect the electrical harness
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Clear the fault codes
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool.
Perform a transmission clutch calibration
Perform a transmission clutch calibration (often accessed via the left-hand dash screen) to ensure the PowerShuttle progressivity and clutch engagement are smooth after the repair.
